I just don't get how anyone can do this to themselves. I've never gotten that.
Especially some of the people who've posted. Then make fun of anything that anyone else does. Oh well, human nature I guess.

The majority of self-harmers should be lined up against a wall and shot, remove their filth from the gene pool. Genocide them.

self-cutting is not really the problem, it's just a facet of, it is characteristic of, the larger problem of borderline personality structure. Borderlines have difficulty dealing with inescapable emotional stress, and they have low tolerance for stress. They find that cutting relieves tension, but the real problem is why they feel such tension in the first place not the maladaptive method of relieving it. Borderlines also tend to decompensate psychotically and/or dissociate when they feel emotionally trapped. There are treatments, but nothing specific in the pharmacopea for this condition.

I'm not going to read through 3 pages, but I was wondering if tattoos and piercings have been brought up? I think that for many people they serve as more than just decor. I know that cutting and self-mutilation prompts the pituitary to produce endorphins and adrenaline as do tattoos and piercings. So do "healthy" activities such as weight lifting, running, ect...

I think most people are ignorant of the amount of endorphin addiction that is present in human society, the difference is how it manifests itself, and how a junkie gets their "fix".

IIRC most find that cutting or other self mutilation leads to heightened feelings of security and wellbeing afterward, so is it the cutting itself, or the physiological effect it has on the body? The mind may not know it, but the body knows that endorphins and adrenaline will help, thus the compulsion.

So do I think that cutters are crazy Emo self-pitying freaks crying out for attention? No more than those who run marathons, skydive, get tats and piercings, ect... Personally I think societies perception of it is worse than the reality. If you can handle the scars and questions, and don't plan to cut yourself to death, I don't see it as a problem. Be aware though that you can get the same effect and a better physique from taking a run around the block

I have scars on my shoulders and chest from an exacto knife. Mostly I prefer to punch walls and stuff when I'm angry. Sometimes I put cigarettes out on my hand/arm...dunno why I do these things. I guess it distracts me from my life and gives some sort of a weird rush.

Because:
1. Focusing on external pain makes one forget about internal/emotional pain.
2. The adrenaline makes you feel all nice inside.
3. It's calming when you're really upset.
4. You might hate yourself so much that you want to hurt yourself.
5. You might feel that you're not worthy of ever being pretty, so you'll make sure that you're as unattractive as possible.
6. The physical wound becomes a substitute for the emotional wound; you can take care of it and watch it heal (or pick away at it so that it won't heal).

I was addicted to the adrenaline rush I got from piercings. I've gotten pierced over 100 times, if not more. I'd get a piercing, let it heal, then I'd take it out and get a new one.
At some point the mainstream piercings didn't do anything for me anymore, so I got into the heavier stuff. For example, I dermal punched my ear cartilage, stretched my earlobes to 24mm, pierced my nipples 6 times and pierced my clit (not the hood) twice.

But that would require a physical effort.

This all sounds familiar to Borderline syndrome...

Quote:
Patients with borderline syndrome are situated 'on the border' of psychosis, neurosis and personality disorders. The skin as a borderline organ carries a symbolic role. The clinical picture includes artefactual skin diseases due to self-mutilation by conscious or unconscious cutting, and rubbing, scratching or para-artefactual manipulations of pre-existing dermatoses. Leading symptoms of the borderline syndrome are poor impulse control, emotional instability and poor ego strength with low frustration tolerance and unstable personal relationships.

I used to cut, since grade 4 or so. If you are still doing it, i'd say you should find a hobby, it helps a LOT. Almost like quitting smoking, except way harder in that instead of avoiding cigarettes your are avoiding having any bad thought about any sharp object around you.
The hobby thing sounds phony, but i have just celebrated my [second] one year, i had fucked up but i quit again, and i haven't done it in a year and a few days now. Every day it gets easier, just learn to push those thoughts away. It is hard, but with a shrink you could get some very good help.

good luck,

I used to cut alot a few years back. I'd also burn myself with whatever I got my hands on.
To this day I still have alot of scarring and such. I reached out for help,
but ended up going at it alone because my parents thought I just wanted attention.
They could never admit that they had a mentally ill kid and that it was mostly their fault.
I just hope that noone else has to go through everything alone like I did.
It was the same deal with my drug addiction. About 3 years clean now though.
