called anencephaly. one of the more morbidly fascinating birth defects. a neural tube disorder where the child virtually has no brain and what it does have just leaks out of the skull. the babies usually dont survive birth or not long after. i think the longest surviving child was about three months or so. the big pod thing is called an encephalocele. if the brain is present, the child can live with corrective surgery, but anencephaly (which is characteristic of the flat top of the skull) is completely fatal.
