I like Pembroke Welsh Corgis. They're not big, but they certainly don't act like a fucking ankle biter. Next to a mixed breed, they're consistently the smartest and most easily trained dog I've ever owned.
But it seems like you just need a short-term dogfix. Dogsit for a friend for a few days. Feed it, clean up its shit; basically make sure you're innit for the marathon and not the sprint. |

Yeah, and they keep 3 or more Anatolians with the flocks to fight them off. They are masters at intimidation, but if that doesn't work they simply kill whatever predator sticks around. They also send them to africa to chase cheetah's away from flocks (to preserve the wild cheetah population, better to have them chased off than shot by black farmers).

i've had several Dobbermans, good companions in the field but short lifespan, became dangerously schizopsychos before their 10th year...something about losing their smell; also do-Not trim their ears. A friend breeds argentine Dogos:

First of all it is "Doberman" not Dobbermans. Secondly, I have had several elderly Dobermans (12 to 14 years old) and NONE went "schizopsycho" due to losing their sense of smell or for any other reason. Next you will say "their brains swell because their skulls are too narrow". Sheesh.

But their skulls are too narrow!
Actually Sonya, that is my experience after 4 dobermans as work dogs in a farm that is not dedicated to breeding dogs, one attacked my dad, another one bit me, there had been several incidents with them killing geese and an attack on a pig; the sense of smell theory was told to me by a vet. Over the last 15 years we've had 3 mutts and 3 Labs, with much better interactions and overall relationships. |

So you have had "four", I have directly cared for 30+ Dobermans, some were my own, some were rescues, plus I knew many other owners that showed Dobes and rescued them. I studied the breed, apparently you did not. They do NOT go "insane" when they get older and your vet is an idiot if he told you those incidents happened because they "lost their smell". Yes, they do have a high prey drive, they are not "farm dogs". They are bred to work closely with people and defend against other humans. That is why I am not getting a dobe for the place in the country, I know they would likely run off into the woods chasing something or engage with coyotes or do some other crazy thing because they are not generally well suited to that type of environment. If you both had Dobes bite you then you must have been a bit clueless as to how to act around them. I have NEVER been bitten by one, ever, and I have taken starved abused older dobes off the streets and forced them into the shower as well as into small travel carriers. Dobermans are NOT for everyone, they are relatively high strung dogs with high prey drives, they are intense and very loyal to their owners, in return they demand a certain level of respect. If you fail to show them that level of respect you may have a problem (and apparently you did). If your family had a problem with different Dobes biting you then it was YOUR problem due to your lack of common sense and not the fault of the dogs.

Narrowed it down to either a black lab or an american bulldog. Leaning towards the bull dog. I played with a one year old american bulldog last night and we were wrestling. He's strong as fuck and I have all kinds of battle scars to prove it but it was solid! Really sweet temperament too.
