A teenage boy has been charged with rape after it emerged a 12-year-old girl is set to become Britain's youngest mum.

The 15-year-old is scheduled to appear again on July 10 at Edinburgh sheriff court having already made a previous appearance, police said.

The youngster, who comes from West Lothian in Scotland, fell pregnant when she was just 11 and is due to give birth next month.
She will break the record set by Jenny Teague of Dorset, who had a baby aged 12 years and nine months in 1997.

The girl told a newspaper she was "really excited" about the prospect of becoming a mother.

"I think I'll be able to cope as I've had lots of practice looking after my brothers," she said in an interview with the paper.

"I'm enjoying being pregnant - even though I get a bit of a sore back and sore ribs."

She feared that she might be pregnant after having unprotected sex with a 15-year-old boy on a night out with friends in Edinburgh last August.

The pregnancy was confirmed with the help of a supermarket home-testing kit.

Her 34-year-old mother told the newspaper: "I'm not ashamed of my daughter at all - in fact, I'm proud of her for keeping her baby."

A spokesman for West Lothian Council said: "We are aware of the situation. We are providing support through our social policy and education teams.

"We are working with the family to support the young person to ensure that the child gets the best possible start."

The pregnant schoolgirl set to become Britain's youngest mum has been pleading with social work bosses to let her keep her baby.

The girl, who was just 11 when she became pregnant, fears the infant may be taken into care when it is born.

The West Lothian youngster, who has not been named, is due to give birth in a few weeks.

She will become the country's youngest mum, breaking the record set by Jenny Teague, of Dorset, who had a baby aged 12 years and nine months in 1997.

However, she told a newspaper that social workers had warned her she may not be allowed to keep her baby.

The paper has reported that they told her the house she shares with her mother and five brothers and sisters may be too small, and needed decorating.

Now she is hoping to get the chance to look after her child.

She told the newspaper: "I just need the chance to prove myself - I know I can be a good mum.

"I've been told by social workers there's a chance the baby won't come home with me from the hospital. They say our house is too small and needs redecorating.

"I'm willing to do whatever it takes to keep my baby, I don't know how I'd cope if I lost it."

And she added: "I feel like I'm being picked on because of my age but I love kids and I think being a mum will come naturally.

"If they take my baby away from me and my family I'll end up really depressed."

The news that the youngster is to become the UK's youngest mum sparked outrage yesterday from the Catholic Church and also led to calls for better sex education.

I think she should be placed in a moms&tots establishement where they all have their own living spaces and are supervised by professionals I dont think she should have to share a house with a mom & 5brothers, Which apparently is already too small and neglected

From what I've heard the girls mother is hardly capable of looking after her own children, therefore it's not as if the girl will have a good example to learn the aspects of taking care of her own baby.
But I do agree, the baby shouldn't be take from the child.
I think it'd be rather a good idea to place the girl and baby with a foster family, so they both have a better environment to live in, and so that they will stay together.

I'd still like to know why this lad's being charged with rape, if both the children were willing. Probably never know though.
