"Artful Codgers" Sentenced
This case made me smile.
Shaun Greenhalgh, 47, a self taught artist and sculptor made copies of famous paintings and sculptures in the shed of his council house in Bolton, Manchester, where he lived with and cared for his elderly parents. The copies were so good, his parents sold them as genuine for vast amounts of money to a number of museums, including the British Museum and others in New York and Milan. The family raked in nearly a million pounds but didn't spend it. It was believed they did it to "get one over" the experts for a bit of fun. Experts have been astounded by Greenhalgh's skill as some of the fakes were knocked up in his shed in three weeks. He was sentenced to four years and eight months yesterday. His mother was given a 12 months conditional discharge and his 84 year old wheelchair bound father is due to be sentenced soon. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...._the_art_world |
