The French and the Polish are outraged by this and they should be. So should we. Polanski's mother died in a concentration camp, his wife was pregnant and then slaughtered by the Manson family. Roman's life wasn't the easiest.

He had consensual sex with a 13 yr old girl. In America, this is so taboo but really, his values aren't like ours. Should he have obeyed the American laws? Every time I try to make an intelligent response to some of what's said in this thread, I read what I wrote and realize it looks like I'm trying to defend a pedophile rapist.
I've started about 4 drafts over the last few days and scrapped them all.

I admire Roman Polanski for all of his great work in the movie industry and also for what he's seemingly overcome in his personal life.
Unfortunately it just takes one F-up to blemish a career and weigh it down forever.
I think that even if he did stick around and accepted whatever he had to do back in the 70's his reputation would always be linked to what transpired.
And now because he fled, the matter is still newsworthy and even worse.

Being able to separate in your mind the man's contributions and this incident is kind of tricky.

I agree. I dislike very much what he did but his movies are amazing, there is no denying that he has contributed to the world in a good with his films. Unfortunately that is overlooked because of his idiotic crime.
