Oh how am I supposed to just choose one? Can you choose your favorite wine or your favorite child? The Thing is in a league of it's own compared to Tom Savini's Night of the Living Dead. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Hellraiser? What about Aliens and the original The Fog? Maybe sub horror genres need to be called into question.

Return of the Living Dead
American Werewolf in London and Dead Alive as runners up. And If I had to choose a fav horror movie based on how scary it actually is instead of just entertainment value, I'd go with 6th Sense. The idea that these ghosts didn't just haunt this kid, but phsyically abused him, was so incredibly disturbing to me. Plus there were so many startling moments, and not simply fun, loud noise induced jump scares like you get in the recent Drag Me To Hell(fun movie BTW, check it out), it had truly unsettling, stay with you for long afterwards startles. Like when he's approaching his mom in the kitchen, and then she turns around... Holy shit that movie hits all the right notes for me. The Descent was incredible too, fairly underrated in my book, of course the original british ending/cut is the only one that should be acknowledged. |

I don't know that I can pick just one, so I have to go with the originals like Jaws, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, and The Exorcist. Also loved Pet Sematary. A Nightmare on Elm Street freaked me out when I was a kid, but in hindsight, it's quite campy.
