Line-in recording with windows

I recently tried to hook a cassette tape deck to my computer. The play back sounded good through my computer but when I tried to record using MusicMatch Jukebox the results were lousy! I tried numerous settings (including adjusting the line-in levels) with no luck. Does anyone in the forum know of any cheap (if possibe free!) software that could be used for down-loading cassettes to my computer through the line-in jacks. I am running WINDOWS XP and Windows Media Player 11 only records off of CD's. Thanks in advance for your help.

On your mixer in the system tray did you adjust the playback levels or the recording levels? The recording level might be too high. You could use adobe audition and record that way. I am guessing that it is your volume control settings though. Try adjusting the one for the mic as well. While in your mixer go to options>properties and then choose adjust for recording or whatever and adjust the level there and try that and see if you get the same results that you are already experiencing.
