Wireless network hacking?

Is it possible for my neighbour to hack into my wireless hub?I have my suspicions. When setting up my router,I needed to enter the security key to get access.
I`m not asking for tips on how to do it.I just want to know if it`s possible and if so ,how can I stop it, or know it`s happening?

unless he has the access code it is doubtful.

It would be very difficult to hack imo and they would lose interest before long

If you download NetworkMagic you get a network map, it shows all the devices that are receiving Internet from your router. If you're on BT you should already have a network map in BroadbandHelp.

But, like ESABATM said, it would be very difficult for someone to crack an encryption code.

It is very possible for your neighbour to be feeding off your router. I am feeding off my neighbour, but my neighbour is my brother-in-law. Make sure that your security password is enabled. There are six wireless networks on my reception area and only two have a password all others are open.

It's the same here with me. My wireless adapter picks up eight routers in range, two are WPA, three are WEP and the other three are wide open to anyone.

The best thing about the most up-to-date routers is they come ready encrypted with the code.

If you use a random and long passphrase then make sure it is WPA or WPA2 you shuld be OK. The problem has been in the past with BT homehubs - the WPA key can be generated using the default SSID. So if you have a BT homehub then yes it is very easy to get in to by using the programs on many sites around. o2 and others are the same, TalkTalk similar too. Any ISP sending out a router preconfgured with SSID and WEP/WPA codes are very easy to use so the best defence is change the SSID, turn off the wireless beacon and change the passprase, also use MAC filtering. Each one makes it more difficult and people will move on and try an unsecured network.
There is even a program for obtaining the WPA key from the Netgear DG834 that SKY supplies!
You can break WEP keys from any router within hours. If you use LINUX on a PC and have a card that handles packet injection you can blast it with data. The return data is analysed and the WEP key presented for the hacker. Airsnort and others will do it.

If your neighbour has the WEP/WPA hack then it's possible. (This was released by the FBI so it's legal and not too hard to get).

If you have secured your wireless correctly using strong passwords then you are fine. I'm ttly sure someone is going to attempt to hack. As far as being legal as you say..stealing is stealing and I bet if you could prove it you'd go to jail.

You have no idea what you're talking about lol.
And I'm not even the one asking the question, just adding to the conversation.

I personally know people who can, it isn't easy and is quite advanced so unless they work in IT security or a similar field it is unlikely, though not impossible.

software is available from the net that takes small packets from the protected router little by little . in the end it organises these packets into an encripted code and then the hacker uses a program that hammers the code with all possible combinations untill voula ! the code is displayed and they have your KEY. gaining them access. this (for long, non dictionary) Keys can take anything up to a few days to decode so my advice is to change your code every week. at least if someone is hacking in then they will in the end choose a neighbour that is easyer and doesnt change theirs. Also look in your manual for your router for how to access its control pannel. it should be something like 1.0.0.225 etc. and the password is usually USER: ADMIN assword (your wep key) and in there look about for the log and have a look to see if any other name of pc is in there. if their is then someones using it so change your key

Im still new to this ish and am trying myself to get into a protected wireless. just so i know i can. i get bord lol

I think this happened to me right after I bought a new laptop. I was using someone elses private network and it got so many viruses so quickly that it destroyed the computer. No antivirus I used could touch it, I used Norton, AVG, and Stopsign. So I returned that shit back to walmart, viruses and all. I told them Windows Vista was too wierd for me and I didnt know how to use it. Then I took the money across the street and got a PS3 and now im glad it happened. I even got my money back from Stopsign.
