My 13 y.o sister and her friends hack wireless.

They have been doing so to their Highschool on their psp's.

She also informed me that the man across the road has wireless and also the neighbor.

A good password stops the ability to hack she informs me.

Hacking an encrypted network isn't as hard as it sounds as some have mentioned already with the Aircrack-Ng suite for linux which also includes Airsnort and Airodump you associate with the access point and run various attacks on it (eg.force any client currently connected to it to have to re associate with the access point) for example, once that happens then you start collecting IV's (Initialization Vector) and then you can do an arp replay attack and i will quote.

"ARP Request Replay Attack
Description

The classic ARP request replay attack is the most effective way to generate new initialization vectors (IVs), and works very reliably. The program listens for an ARP packet then retransmits it back to the access point. This, in turn, causes the access point to repeat the ARP packet with a new IV. The program retransmits the same ARP packet over and over. However, each ARP packet repeated by the access point has a new IVs. It is all these new IVs which allow you to determine the WEP key."

Then as stated by someone earlier the results are checked against a dictionary file and if the key is in there then you're in business. WEP is easy ...WPA is a slightly different story.

For anyone interested in auditing the security of their OWN networks, I would like to suggest Backtrack as there is no need to install it as it is a live OS and will run right from the disc without hurting your current setup. It is possible to install it to the hard drive though and it will run a lot quicker. It is a Linux distribution and is free of course and comes loaded with very useful tools but if you don't know your way around Linux very well then you might be stuck a bit lol . I personally use Backtrack 3.0 (based on slackware) on my notebook. Backtrack 4 is available but I haven't used that one enough to form an opinion about it :P . You could always research ARP attacks and how to defend against them and such good luck.
