F'n YouTube

Would anyone out there know if there's a way to step up the resolution of a video after you download it from YouTube?
I have plenty of conversion programs but I'm not sure if I need to use filters or use a codec or what the best compression is for these type of videos.
Some of the vids on YouTube are decent quality so that's a plus but as we all know a lot of them look like the world is made of huge squares.
Ive been trying a lot of different things to improve the quality of the vids but I would be forever grateful if someone could tell me the magic formula to smooth out those squares!
Thank You!

when you use your programs to grab your youtube vids. do you have to paste the link into the progam? i.e

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNfQ0ORwSDM

?

if so then when your pasting, add &fmt=18 to the end.

it will look like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNfQ0ORwSDM&fmt=18

this will force the high(er) quality mode, apparently even if videos wernt uploaded in higher quality in the first place it still could help it.

hope this helps

... thats to grab the video in a bit higher quality. if you want to edit it youll need a good program like Adobe Premiere. and mess with the contrast, HUE, saturation, SMART BLUR AND sharpen. all will depend on each video your editing.

The "&fmt=" works but not for all cases. There are some vids which are just beyond hope.

Nevertheless, there are many "&fmt=" you can use, not just 18 alone. Ive seen one with 35 or some other number I cant remb. They are constantly updating. Read up the comments.

This is old but will answer anyway.

As nana said above all won't work all the time.
Bored with Youtube? Play around with these

&fmt=18 will put it in HQ
&flip=1 will flip the page
&fmt=hd will put it in a slow hd video
&fmt=..6 ? high quality FLV, 480x360
&fmt=18 ? high quality MP4, 480x360
&fmt=22 ? high definition MP4, 1280x720
&fmt=17 ? mobile quality 3GP, 176x144
&hd =..1 ? show video in high definition

This is for "embedded" YouTube videos:
&autoplay=1 ? start playing right away
&start=## ? where video should start
&loop=1 ? replay video in infinite loop
&rel=1 ? load "related videos" in player
&egm=1 ? show "related videos" when mouse is on player
&border=1 ? allow border around player
&color1=# ? color of the player border
&color2=# ? color of the player buttons
&start=## ? where video should start

YT is going through some bad growing pains IMO. Not good for the little guys (well except for Fred http://www.youtube.com/fred) Silly huh

A late thank you

First of all I apologize for being so late with the thank you's that you people deserve.
Ive never gotten ANY response for my question except in this forum!
As it's been some time since Ive posted my question Ive been experimenting with different things and this is what Ive came up with.
I use the Download Helper plug in to download the .FLV videos because all I have to do is start the download and maybe rename it so I know what it is.
It gives me the choice if there are different resolutions for the video I want to download so I obviously pick the best one.
On other sites besides YOUTUBE there's only going to be the resolution that you find it in BUT here's the deal. If I convert the .FLV video's into MPEG4 DIVX or XVID with TWO PASS encoding the video resolution can be enlarged to 640x480 or whatever and it won't look like it's a 320x240 video that I tried to make bigger.
I use the AVS Video Converter for that part.
Now sometimes the .FLV file can't be read by the AVS converter so I use another converter called Any Video Converter and convert it to MPEG4 before I use AVS Video Converter and I do the TWO PASS conversion.
I know it sounds dumb to use two video converters but I have convinced myself that the conversion with the AVS Video Converter looks better plus like I said if the AVS converter can't read the .FLV file Any Video Converter will and then it can be read with AVS.
It solves the problem of not being able to use the video that you want for whatever reason so you can ALWAYS use the video that you want.
Ive discovered that when you go to the directory were the .FLV files are and the Files Of Type: window says Media File (All Types) you might not see all the videos that you downloaded listed BUT if you change the Files Of Type: window to All Files (*.*) then all of the videos are listed and then you can convert them with Any Video Converter.
So that's what I came up with after a whole bunch of different experiments and GOOGLEing!
I'm saving the information that you good people have given me and experimenting some more. Thank you very much!
I hope all this info on this topic can help other people with the same question.
