i use media player classic for all my media needs. it's a little on the no-frills side (e.g., no playlists, no fancy graphics for music, etc.), but it gets the job done quick and easy with a very conservative interface... i'm not a big fan of bells and whistles on my software unless i specifically request them.

edit: it's also handy to get a good codec pack, i'm using the k-lite codec pack and the codecs to play mov's and rm's as well, all within media player classic. nobody likes to have to install realplayer and quicktime, do they?

I use that for pretty much everything but i found it refuses to play a few things, the ones it cannot play nero showtime will play.

I've been using VLC media player for a few months...plays everything without hiccups.
Basic program that really does the job without having to hunt down codecs.

My player of choice as well. It came bundled with the K-lite codec pack and I instantly liked it. Playlists are not something I often use anyways (in old-school fashion, I still listen to entire albums), and I always hated the graphic crap in Windows Media. It's not as if I sit there and watch my music... The realplayer and quicktime alternatives are indeed a most excellent option too.

i've never had to use it, but i've heard more than enough to avoid it like the plague. i use media player classic for .rm files, works just fine, including the streaming variants.

To anyone else who may be having or will one day have this problem, do this:

Download this extension into firefox by clicking on the link below:

http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/index-en.html#searchkeys

Once downloaded, you need to install it. When you click to install the extension you will be be prompted with a message that says "Windows cannot open this file"; when you get this message, choose "select the program from a list" option and locate the file firefox.exe , which can typically be found by following this path: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

After your installation, restart Firefox.

After Firefox has been restarted, enter exactly this: about:config into the address bar (where you type web addresses).

then,

Enter: searchkeys.disable.all in the filter at the top of the page that pulls up.

then,

Set searchkeys.disable.all to "true" by clicking on the entire row.

Then, close firefox and reopen it and that should work.
It's a byootiful thing.
Worked for me. Glad this was here!

Skype

As I was researching to buy a Skype phone for Christmas, I find that now I can pretty much have service (much like a landline) that costs for an entire year what I spend for 2 weeks of phone service now - about $30US.
The major investment is simply the phones...there are even cordless ones.
I knew the day was coming when internet phone service would be close to free, but I thought the clouds would part and I'd hear an angelic aria...
I know alot of members use Skype, I just am wondering if it is too good to be true?

free landline calling via skype throughout NA is no more as of jan 1st 2007, that and you need to be near a wifi to use it. So the only free calls you can make with it will have to be to other people who have a skype account and who just happen to have their pc on and who just happen to be logged in. otherwise you will need to pay to call.

edit: all is afaik

Unlimited outgoing calls (to any number in US and Canada) - 14.95/yr
InSkype phone number with voicemail - 38.00/yr

This is close to free for me, considering my monthly phone bill per line is around 70.00 per month.
You don't need wifi to use it-not from what I've read.

dsl is a ripoff its way slower than cable plus its gay but what do u mean by spoof a mac addy for cable whats your plan with that anyways just google spoof mac theres like 2,000 programs written by 14 year old scandinavian kids that do that for you and then freeze your computer its hella useful when u need to dl all 15 rar archives of a porn from rapidshare and are too poor to pay for a rs account

anyways just buy wireless cards/adapters for your computers and leech off one of the neighbors if u can't do that then don't kid yourself u can't get high speed internet for under 40 dollars a month unless u switch and get one of those gay packages for 20 dollars a month for 3 months
