Can't move a file

I'm trying to move a couple of files into different folders, and it keeps popping up with the message that the file is already in use. It is not in use, I've closed out of all applications and they still will do this.

I've scanned them for viruses with three different programs, and they are coming up clean.

Any suggestions?

Go onto safe mode, move it and reboot back into normal windows.

^ Good. ^ There's several ways to do that.
Use Unlocker
http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/
or
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Once installed you can right click on the file & "unlock" it. You can even use it to "move" the file too. It's free. It's a must have for me on every clean reinstall.

There's FileASSASSIN too but doesn't work all the time. It's from the same folks who make the famous Malwarebytes Anti-spyware whick does work excellent!
FileASSASSIN
http://www.malwarebytes.org/fileassassin.php

Hope this helps. That "File being used" popup & that Clunk sound can be very annoying

One should be careful when using unlocker, because the contents of the file which is unlocked may be lost.

Interesting & possible useful info. I have not had a problem with that before but will for sure keep my eyes open for that topic. I would not want that to happen to me nor anyone else.
Thanks

Reboot and move them then. Windows keeps files associated with the program that runs them, if the computer is still running after using them. Just reboot. No need to download anything, unless you want to.

Just saying.

That doesn't always work. Sometimes, certain files may remain in use even after a reboot for obscure reasons.

Personally, I have an application that can force-delete. I haven't had to force-move anything yet, but if I do, I might look into one of these applications.

True. Glad you said it. I didn't want too.

There are a few more but Unlocker has served me well for the most part. It's simple too. I'm just adding this as a FYI to whomever may need these in the future.

And be more careful with this one
http://www.killbox.net/

Sometimes I use Spybot to delete files on reboot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

I have Malewarebytes as well as IObit but I've never had to run them to delete a program of file.
Sounds like the file is shady to begin with, which is why it wouldn't be on my system.

Any legit file or program can be exited, and removed from a PC. As long as you've ended it from talking to what it's associated with, it shouldn't be an issue.
In my experience, anyway. I've run into some very stubborn ones, but usually spyware was associated with them.

Forgot to mention when using an unlocker like http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/
or
http://www.malwarebytes.org/fileassassin.php
if it comes up that the file is locked by explorer.exe by all mean always unlock it, then you can do what you want with the file.
explorer.exe is the most common file locked & no harm will come from unlocking it. Not "killing" it but merely "unlocking"

Mostly porn and games if you must know, lol. But there have been "legit" programs that dickheads like to stick malicious code in.

A/V and spyware programs catch most, but not all. Which is why I run a few anti maleware programs.

Maleware Bytes is one, and Spybot is another. I run others as well.
But, my system is clean, and why pay for a game you might not like? If it's good I'll buy it, if not, deleted.
