I have a paypal account but I am not allowed to publicly ask for donations because of UR's content. If anyone would like to donate drop me a PM and I will give you my details.

Does this mean UR is actually considering giving in to Internet Brands BBB (bullying, blackmail and bullshit) ?

Despite the facts being outlined in several posts, both here and on the vBulletin sites - nobody really seems to grasp the implications. vB have scrapped renewals and leases. The new licence charges are for the life of the series, and vBulletin have already let it be known that the time frame between new versions will be reduced to around 12 to 15 months. They're turning it into a ca$hcow, it's as simple as that.

Saying vB is the best is like saying Windows is the best OS. It isn't. It's popular because it's easy to use, and lots of people develop things for it. With the new structure of vB, those developments are set to change and it's likely that coders/designers/developers will start charging for the mods they've previously been happy to give away free.

They haven't even got a Release Candidate for 4.0 yet, but once it's out, this same dilemma will be around again within 18 months maximum when version 5 is released. That pushes the cost of "owning" a license up to around $300 almost every year, instead of the current $40 -$60 (depending on payment date) active licence renewal fee. And who's to say they won't bump the price again next year?

By all means solve the problem with donations, a whip-round, or just load the place up with even more ads. Then next year the whole bullshit mess will rear it's ugly head again . . . "shall we upgrade to vB 5.0 or stay with 4.0" The only way to deal with companies that behave like this is to boycott them. The more owners who refuse to pay, the quicker vB will have to rethink or go bust.

I've yet to hear of the 3.8 version being hacked or exploited, providing it's run on a properly managed server. And even if it was hacked, it could be restored from a backup. UR does have regular backups, doesn't it???

What is it that this site actually needs, that vB4 would provide? Fact is, nobody knows . . . all we have is vBullshit saying "it will be better". Sure it will, better for them, and an all out e-mugging for the owners.

I can't emphasise the point enough: Stay with 3.8 and WAIT.

I don't see why the decision has to be black or white.

Test it out by viewing forums that have made the switch. Encourage others to take a look. Screen shots and shit. Um... a sticky. Yadda yadda. [More painfully obvious advice about things you're already doing.]

If things look great on the other side of the fence and it comes down to a matter of you needing to drag the rest of them into the water over listening to the majority of the misinformed and opinionated, do it.

You and I find ourselves on this site for free and fairly often.
Show a little gratitude where it's due.
