Work some overtime and quit complaining about a few extra dollars, vb offers what you want/need, using something else now would only make matters worse in many ways, it isn't a monopoly they have. It is the best product and you/they know it.

If it is only "a few extra dollars" why don't you pay it then?

Actually, this is a poll that started off with sensible and reasoned discourse. Staying with 3.8 and wait & see are very much the same thing, and clearly this option is favoured by the majority.

A valid point I think. Anyone suggesting it's just a few extra dollars obviously hasn't done the math, and has no insight into where vBulletin are heading.

But apart from all that, it's content that decides whether a forum succeeds or dies - not the software version. In the case of UR with 1.2 million posts and membership rapidly approaching 91,000 content is clearly more important than the software version it runs on.

It is clear that as 4.0 is a major rewrite of the software a large amount of current features and plugins will not work and from the feedback on various sites a lot of the software writers may desert vB. This has put many people in an awkward position for various reasons (mainly $s though) UR atm is in a good position as the ads just about pay for the server.

The dilemma faced is...

Do we sign up for the new software even if it can not be tested?

Wait and see.

Change the software to another type ie mybb or ipb.

Stay as UR is with 3.8.

There are quite a few issues that need to be cleared up such as vbseo etc so could we open a new forum on the new software.

Luckily I will most likely be able to download 4.0 before I need to renew as I renewed in September. So it is possible we might be able to try it before I have to pay.

Indeed but if I get it now it is $130, if I wait it is nearly $300
Would you not be more secure with a version you and staff have a solid grip on vs a "new" unproven version? Not all sites upgrade at every vb release.

It is easy to understand the frustration with their marketing plan, but do you really need to run the newest version of vb?

What other software is as good or better than vb?

none

The math is the easy part, it's the very same math that gives 1.2 million posts and 91,000 members.... the cost per post/member is tiny as compared to smaller sites with less traffic/members.

The numbers are just that numbers, he has advertising. Maybe he needs to increase his rates to the companies that run ads.

Who gives a shit! Maybe you should truck on over there and start your own poll on the subject. I'm sure it would be equally well-received as your pointless and misinformed comments here.

That's completely irrelevant. It simply means that 1 person is carrying the load for many, and certainly does nothing to address the issues of bullying, blackmail, and "buy it now, get it when we're ready" as presented by vB

You're misinformed again. Advertisers pay fixed rates depending on clicks, referrals, purchases etc. The only way to increase revenue is to make ads more intrusive. Since a vast percentage of UR members either block or ignore the existing ads, and others object to intrusion, this is not a realistic proposition.

Is this forum a hobby or a business?

Hobby's cost money, businesses make money.

Supporting others hobbies is plain stupid, this thread is an attempt to air the hobbyist view of push/shove business ethics.

HOBBY or BUSINESS?

So torque, whats your hobby? By any chance is it posting on forums?

Let's see, several thousand posts this year. That would be a yes then. This is your hobby as well as ppm's, so please do continue to wail - you're only making yourself look foolish.

PayPal doesn't like the content of UR. He's tried doing that.
