the moonflower is datura, or when it's more of a tree form called brugmansia. Erowid dot org has some pages on them. They are indigenous to the southwest US, and smell very good. The trees are easier to grow.

The cobra lilies grow nearby where I live, here is a patch I saw recently.

from a botanist friend- "Rafflesia arnoldii-(the big orange one in this post) This is the worlds largest flower. It is known as the corpse flower because it smells like rotting flesh. It is found in the jungles of Sumatra, but its numbers are drastically decreasing and its existence becoming threatened. It is an unusual plant in that it mimics the earliest ancestors of life on this planet. It has no roots, no leaves, and no stems, just a giant fucking stinky flower. It is parasitc, and lives off one specific vine found in the jungle. It reaches 3 feet in diameter, and can weigh up to 15 pounds.

Amorphophallus titanum-(the big purple and white one pictured in the earlier posts) Another species of the "corpse flower" found in Sumatra, but more well known due to its exposure through botanical gardens. This one is actually much larger than the one above, but it is not one single flower. Rather, the inflourescense on this flower is comprised of thousands of tiny flowers. This one reaches heights of 7-12 feet, can weigh up to 120 pounds, and has leaves that can reach over 20 feet high!!! If you ever live around a botanical garden that has one of these in bloom, it is worth the time to wait in the un-doubtebly long line (although you can really only admire it for about as long as you can hold your breath)."

Since these plants seem more like animals (in a way), do they have feelings?

The castor bean plant is the most poisonous plant in the world. Consumption of the seeds or leaves can and will result in death of a human, if not treated in time. Can grow up to 15' tall.

I bought a packet of these seeds via mail, simply due to the size of the plant. I have a lot of planting room in my yard and needed some empty space filled. After they started growing like wild, only then did I move forward with additional research and learned exactly how dangerous they were. I had planted these in my front yard right near the sidewalk where kids play, etc. So do I pull them? Nope - went to all the neighbors homes with kids and warned them to make sure their offspring don't play in my yard. I was nice about it, but well... you know.

Got rid of them though. Couldn't risk finding a dead kid or dog near my mailbox.

Indeed, contains Ricin

Ricin (... known as RCA60) is a potent biotoxin which can be extracted from the castor bean and is considered an important potential bioterrorism weapon. Ricin consists of a lectin component (the B-chain) and a toxin component (the A-chain) linked by a disulfide bond. The A-chain is a ribosome-inactivating enzyme with a molecular weight of 32 kDa that cleaves adenine 4324 of the 28S RNA in the 60S ribosomal subunit. The B-chain is a galactose/N-acetylgalactosamine-binding lectin (34 kDa) which binds to cell surfaces and is detached after endocytosis when the A-chain is released to the cytoplasm. Together, the two chains constitute one of the most potent cytotoxins in nature whereas no toxic effects are known for the isolated single chains. Ricin causes extensive cell death and doses down to 1 mg can be lethal.

Bulgarian author and dissident Georgi Ivanov Markov.

This was the famous case of the man being pricked by an umbrella carrying a pellet of ricin.

The pellet entered his body and he died in agony I believe 72 to 120 hours later

Another interesting case

And then there is the case of Dr. Deborah Green, a Kansas city onocologist, wife, and mother who distilled ricin from castor beans and used it to poison her husband. The case is recounted in the Ann Rule book Bitter Harvest -- it's a troubling story, mostly because it shows how normal-seeming people can do horrible things. But also because it demonstrates how easy it is to formulate ricin (Green got the idea from an Agatha Christie story).
Green's biggest problem was getting the castor beans, which she had to say were for her son's science project. But castor beans are readily available in many gardens.

He lived despite the poisoning (thank God) but it showed an interesting clinical observation:

Despite being poisoned by ricin over a long period of time he did survive. The doctors treating this man (who is also a Physician himself) did not suspect ricin until several weeks into his illness. The Doctor (victim) discovered castor beans in his wife's personal items and alerted the proper officials.

So he endured ricin poisoning over a period of several weeks and still survived proving that in certain cases it is possible to survive ricin poisoning.

I do believe that the degree of evil required to plan and execute killing someone with ricin would be of such a massive degree that I cannot even conceive of such a person.

To die by ricin ,,,,well frankly?

You would die over a period of days (like Markov) not right away.

You would die in writhing agony, pain of such a measure I cannot comprehend or visualise.

Abdominal Cramps of such a degree that ......I can't even imagine

And they would get worse and and worse over a period of days and then you would die

Again I sometimes step back and just wonder how human beings can become so evil.

Sometimes you think about it, it is simply staggering

I love these types of plants, and I like how the Rafflesia looks. Try growing one of those in New York City and see how many people come knocking on your door because of the smell.

I had a Venus fly trap once for a few months, but it turned black and died. Only once did I get to see it clamp down on a retarded fly.
