KENNESAW, Ga - Several Kennesaw officials attribute a drop in crime in the city over the past two decades to a law that requires residents to have a gun in the house.

In 1982, the Kennesaw City Council unanimously passed a law requiring heads of households to own at least one firearm with ammunition.

The ordinance states the gun law is needed to "protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants."

Then-councilman J.O. Stephenson said after the ordinance was passed, everyone "went crazy."

"People all over the country said there would be shootings in the street and violence in homes," he said. "Of course, that wasn't the case."

In fact, according to Stephenson, it caused the crime rate in the city to plunge.

Kennesaw Historical Society president Robert Jones said following the law's passage, the crime rate dropped 89 percent in the city, compared to the modest 10 percent drop statewide.

"It did drop after it was passed," he said. "After it initially dropped, it has stayed at the same low level for the past 16 years."

i don't think they should allow any one to have guns available to anyone in Britain. We have enough violent crime as it is. The only reason the subject of guns ownership has arisen is that the British club system which over controlling in general is a failure. The fact that a particularly social class with good breeding and connections will run the economy best is a nonsense. All the excessive rules,laws and regulations has made Britain economic uncompetitive creating undue poverty, increase crime and violence. The British police force admitted ages ago they can't control anymore the crime due to the rising social inequalities due to the country's structural economic problems. The fact that police force is now armed has infact increased the amount of firearm incidents in Britain, which is a regressive step. In general the police don't carry guns but weapons are stored in a special safe in the cars and require permission from an inspector before engaging a potential firearms incident. At the same time each station now have firearm teams always armed usually with machine gun mp5. I think all this regressive, you can't solve a social problem via a armed solution, without resolving the root causes of inequality.

In Canada and America gun ownership has been a disaster, particularly when you include drug related crimes, and an electorate who refuse to fund educational, skills and social programs. The issue of gun ownership is political problem involving people avoiding their social responsibility to those less fortunate in society.
