Death Scenes - A Homicide Detective's Scrapbook

Evenin' all.

Some time ago I bought a copy of Death Scenes, A Homicide Detective's Scrapbook (ISBN 0922915296).
So that you don't have to buy it I've scanned in all the pictures that were worthwhile and added what information I have on each one.

So, without further ado, here we are: Jack Huddleston’s scrapbook of crimes in Los Angeles 1920's-1950’s. Please excuse the use of the terms “Jap” & “Negro”, that is how they are labelled in this book from a different age.

Some of these images may well be reposts, sorry in advance for that: blame those who stole them from the scrapbook originally.

1. AliceJonesStarvedToDeath – found under her home after some months had passed, she had starved to death from poverty.
2. ChestCrushed – Young man was in the wrong place at wrong time.
3. FireThreeDead – Three killed by explosion at workplace.
4. Hermaphrodite – Male + Female. The second image could be a morgue shot, or just a hospital one.
5. HitAndRun – Run down by automobile, left for dead.
6. This one bothers me – complete human skin found in city dump. Unsolved.

1. HitByTrainMorgue – Male hit by train, extensive damage to lower body. Morgue photograph.
2. LockJaw – What we now call Tetanus. Looks rather painful.
3. MorbidObesity – Incorrectly labelled in the book as “Elephantitis”, actually more likely to be gross obesity. Morgue photo.
4. MoveableTumour – Unsure whether “moveable” means the old man with the tumour (ie: hobo or tramp) or if it refers to the fact that the tumour can be moved around under his skin.
5. TertiarySyphilis – Labelled in the book as “Leprosy”, but that's incorrect. Is actually advanced Syphilis.

1. AutoAccidentFacesA – Close up morgue photos of car accident victims
2. AutoAccidentFacesB – ^^ Ditto
3. AutoAccidentKaishaku – Head snapped off as car rolls over
4. AutoAccidentKaishakuHead – The head from picture above in middle of road. Looks peaceful, like he was buried up to his neck in sand.
5. AutoBurnTwoKilled – Two people immolated in car accident

Jack doesn’t have very much sympathy for those who self-destruct and leave their carcasses for someone else to find, the pictures of Suicidal hangings are simply captioned “JUST A LITTLE THROAT TROUBLE”

1. JapaneseTriSuicide – Japanese parents shot their child then each other. Judging from location, the reason must have been destitution.
2. MurderAndSuicideA – Murdered girlfriend....
3. MurderAndSuicideB - ....Then Shot himself
4. MurderAndSuicideByShotGun – Killed another man with shotgun, then turned gun on himself. Notice ejected brains on porch.
5. Suicide- Left picture is handgun to temple; right image is woman who committed suicide by consuming ant poison and then knifing herself

1. SuicideBee – Mr O’Toole jumped out of the courtroom window when he was sentenced to death for the murder of his wife (left) Right image is Joe Martin drowned in his bathtub. Looks tricky, fair play to him.
2. SuicideByBlastingMachine – Made a wee detonation pack out of some TNT and a plunger, and rested the Bang-Bang-Putty on his head.
3. SuicideFef – Image on top right looks like a gunshot wound to the head. Below that is a Japanese male who has committed suicide by “Hari-Kari” (belly-cut). Since that is absolutely agonising and even the hardest samurai would be finished off by decapitation within a few seconds of evisceration, he has my respect. On the right hand side is Japanese who has slashed his throat deeply. Twice. Hardcore bastards.
4. SuicideInBathTub – A Doctor. Murdered his wife with poison, then climbed into the bathtub and killed himself.

1. ShotgunSuicides – Shotgun to face in both cases
2. MoreShotGunSuicide – Homemade Shotgun (I like the way he tucked himself into bed, may as well be comfy) and John Woo-style Shotgun suicide.
3. SuicideShotgunDecapitation – Complete removal of head by shotgun
4. SuicideDee – Suicides by handgun
5. SuicideEee – Shotgun Suicides, destruction of face

1. MurderedBabies – Newborn children, one dumped in the sea (alive), and one strangled and dumped in a bin.
2. MurderedSevenYearOldNegroChild – Title is self explanatory.
3. BabyMurderByParent – Male Jap stabbed his child to death, then himself (left). Baby put on chopping block and beheaded by mother (right)
4. BabyStrangledByMum – Baby strangled with lamp cord then hidden in a bag.
5. ChildKillerAlbertDyer – The description of a serial killer is someone who kills three or more over a period of time. He did, all children.

1. ChildrenMurderedByMum – Mrs Lolita Davis killed her three children with a hammer then committed suicide
2. CriminalAbortion – Illegal abortion, corpse dumped.
3. Dynamite(boy) – Two kids were playing with some dynamite they found at a dam, it went off in their hands. Neither ever identified.
4. Dynamite(girl) – The other one of the pair. Darwinism in action?
5. KilledByFamilyDog – 21 month old baby killed by family dog “Woof”. Motive – jealously.

1. MurderedByBandit – Tied, gagged and shot
2. MurderedHusbands – (left) Old male had his throat cut by his wife as he was asleep, (right) Stabbed and wrists slashed by girlfriend.
3. SlashedMurder – Male, slashed to death. Morgue Photo.
4. ThatsRightGunsThatFireShotsYouMustBeTheBrains – Male shot with shotgun by bartender.
5. BootlegMurder – Connected to illegal trade in alcohol during prohibition. Unsure where the left of his head has gone

1. CheshireCatSmile – Tortured and murdered by a gang – cheeks slashed and tongue cut out.
2. DecapitationByAxe – Male beheaded with an Axe.
3. FacesOfMurder – Morgue photos of murder victims. Left is stab wound with thin blade to the temple. Right image is repeatedly slashed throat.
4. KingOfSpadesMurders – Took place in a café/restaurant. Two gang members were shot as they ate, police officer was shot on general principles and the bartender was shot for laughs.

1. MurderedWives – Two different women murdered by their husbands
2. BenanciaSalidraMurderedByBoyfriend – Ms Salidra stabbed to death by her boyfriend. Notice self-defense injuries to arms and hand.
3. FloHoneycuttMurderedWithCarvingKnifeAndMeatTenderi serByHusband – Woman was slashed open with a carving knife and then beaten to death with a meat tenderiser (A spiky hammer). By her husband. In front of her mother. He was gassed to death two years later (good).
4. MarieCastanedaMurderedByBoyfriendWithBrokenBottle – Her boyfriend broke a wine bottle and cut her to death with it.
5. MinnieSieberKilledByHusbandWithIronBar – Husband caved her skull in with an Iron Bar.

1. MumMurderedByDaughter – Mrs Adams stabbed 21 times by her insane daughter.
2. MurderedNegroFemale – Young black woman murdered.
3. MurderedProstitute – Why is it that when men “LustMord” prostitutes, they usually carve them open? Isn’t that a bit risky, disease wise? (Thats a retorical question, btw.)
4. MurderOrSuicide – I’m guessing murder here, it’s hard to put a knife that far into yourself and suicides don’t usually have their nightgowns hoisted up.
5. RedLipStickMurder – Jeanne French was stomped to death. Her attacker then stripped her and wrote “FUCK YOU” on her chest in red lipstick.

1. SelfDefenseInjuries – Injuries say attacked by large knife. Notice very extensive self-defense injuries to the hands and arms.
2. SelfDefenseInjuriesBee – Same guy ^^, different view of wounds.
3. BodyHiddenInWallBed – Lesbian murdered and body hidden in a folding wall bed.
4. ChuckieDasparroStabbed – Prostitute, stripped and stabbed 22 times. Also in the image is her mug-shot for when she was previously arrested for prostitution.
