Well of course he is going to say that after it became apparent he was despised for his actions. Sort of like Michael Vick saying "I know what I did was wrong". I personally think everyone was too hard on him, those people WERE a disease risk and he was a reporter not an aid worker. Sheesh are wildlife photographers expected to save every abandoned baby gazelle, or every little bird that falls out of the nest? Of course not! I am surprised the people on this site can get so judgemental over something like that. It was NOT intentional cruelty, he didn't abandon that kid so it could starve, he didn't torture the kid for kicks, it was NOT his responsibility!

You know Sonya is 100% right. It wasn't his responsibility or ANYONE elses to help these people. Racism blah blah blah put all that aside. And just consider the fact that these things are disease ridden, parasite infested things, which only bring problems.
If you were there on that day would YOU pick it up and try and help. I honestly highly doubt it...I bet the first thing that would cross any of your minds is "Fuck i don't want to risk getting AIDS or some other disease." If yes, you're an idiot. Plain and simple.

You wouldn't simply wonder over and pick it up tho. you would be smart enough to use your jacket or something... i myself WOULDNT have been able to walk away from that. I think it would have led me to kill myself to.as people have said its the kinda thing that would haunt you. Knowing you got a prize and the child who won it for you, you left to die.

I don't believe many here are really thinking about what that type of environment is like. There would be dying kids all OVER the place! Even if it made it to the camp chances are it would still die.
I think the posters here are imaging THEIR world and how they would react. If you went to the mall and saw some skinny sickly child in rags begging for money so they could eat in the parking lot no doubt you would be shocked and give them some money at the very least. On the otherhand if you were in Bangladesh, and saw HUNDREDS of those kids everyday you would not be so moved by it, you can't save them all, you accept it as part of life. That reporter saw things that most of us cannot even imagine. Do not judge him unless you have walked in his shoes.

Well part of his suicide note, provided by SilverBack (page 1) in this thread from 2007 explains:
He wrote, he was "depressed . . . without phone . . . money for rent . . . money for child support . . . money for debts . . . money!!! . . . I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain . . . of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners . . . I have gone to join Ken if I am that lucky".

Yeah and he may have been TRAVELING with others that would have said "What in the hell are you thinking? No way, you are not putting that in my car and I am not driving out of my way!"
People get jaded. Plus in such a fucked up environment there may be a strong tendency to "follow the rules". If the rules are don't touch refugees that is what you do.
