Professional Ajax - Decent book on Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. If you ever worked with Ajax then it probably won't teach you much. I was kind of disappointed to be honest. I bought it to help to try and come up with a better solution to the "back button" and "history" problems and they didn't even present a solution. Sigh...

God's Demon by Wayne Barlowe (the artist)

This is definitely one of the best books I've read in a long time. I can't recommend it enough.

The story takes place in Hell. Lucifer has disappeared after the fall and Beelzebub (aka The Fly) is ruling Hell. A demon major named Sargatanas decides he wants to go back to Heaven and seeks redemption from God by going to war with Beelzebub. He's assisted by damned souls lead by a very historical figure know for his skill at war (don't want to give the name away).

I spent two months reading that, then found some bastard had ripped the last page out. I never did find out who the killer was.

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it’s currently in my Netflix queue. Thought I would read the book before the movie got here.

The story is about an extremely intelligent young man named Christopher McCandless, an honors graduate from Emory University from a well off family. After his graduation from college, he changed his name, donated his 24K savings to charity, broke off all communications from his family and decided to hitchhike/tramp his way through most of the Western part of the USA.
Influenced by his favorite writers: London, Tolstoy and Thoreau, he chooses Alaska as his ultimate destination with the intention of living off the land. Eventually he ends up starving to death in an old bus on a rarely used trail in the Alaskan wilderness. Attached is probably one of the last pics he took of himself before his death. You can see how emaciated he looked.

The irony of his death is that he donated his 24K savings to Oxfam, a charity that fights hunger and poverty.

Great book. The author did a good job piecing together Chris' life through Chris' own journal, photographs, letters he sent to friends he met on the road and interviews with friends and family.

I remember reading a review of that a few years ago and decided to read it then forgot. I'll get it this week, thanks. Seems like the lad didn't do his homework, but fascinating despite and because of that. Cheers.

Yeah, Krakauer's account of his ascent of Devil's Thumb in Into the Wild is so good. Makes me want to get 'Into Thin Air', his account of the ill-fated Everest expedition in '96, I think it was. Thanks for posting that picture of Chris McCandless too! They're hard to find.
