Gordon Freeman is currently beating Mario in the last round of this gay contest by a landslide, though it's not over yet.

I've been rooting for Gordon Freeman, Duke Nukem, JC Denton, and The Nameless One from the beginning, and I honestly didn't think Freeman had a chance against Mario. I'm glad to see some people with taste in the world; Gordon is clearly superior.

More than that, a win for Gordon over Mario is a victory for PC gaming over console gaming. Fuck you, console gaming peasants!

Oh yeah, I recommend you read the Greatest Hero forums there, and behold the sweet tears of nerd rage as the beloved fat Japanese plumber gets destroyed by an awesome crowbar-wielding scientist.

I'm unsure how a character who has no dialogue and hence no discernible character or personality can be voted GREATEST VIDEOGAME HERO EVER.

He just plods around, does as he's ordered to, never says a word, and always has someone come save the day when it goes horribly wrong and yet everyone gives him the credit for it.

Pretty boring really.

So he doesn't talk, who cares? He's a scientist (science is awesome), he hits aliens and zombies with a crowbar (even more awesome), and you and I both know the Half-Life games are amazing.

More to the point, the other characters in the Half-Life games do talk, and Valve does a phenomenal job with that. The animations, voice acting and modeling for Alyx Vance and the G-Man are bloody fantastic, even by 2009 standards.

So although he doesn't talk, he still has an awesome character concept, the games he stars in are fantastic, and the supporting actors have plenty of personality.

Now, I'd rather The Nameless One, Duke Nukem or JC Denton had won. Don't get me wrong on that score, but they never made it to the finals.

Mario is a fat Italian plumber stereotype whose lines in his games amount to "Oh no!" "It's a-me, Mario!" and "Hokay!" He has no personality, unless you consider a cracked-out, eternally gleeful Italian midget to count as "personality."

How many words does it take to blow the fuck out of space aliens, pirates, goombas, baddies, in general? In these assumed roles, the character is a man of action, and best be due to having no sense of dialogue; which is helpful in some cases b/c it's not fun in every game to read a 2000 monologue every 10 minutes on why character A has a love conflict with character B.

No, that's the point! He's the every man. People identify with that shit. There's nothing special or ornate about him, He gets credit b/c he acts upon his choices, choices related to the influence of the game player, and every achievement gained becomes not only his, but our own. A lot of silent characters are effective... but there are exceptions.. like Vaan From FFXII. What a faggot.
