Intelligent design theory and science have nothing to do with each other.
In fact, there's not even a significant debate about this matter despite the many failed attempts at trying to have the theory deemed substantial. If we were to approach evolution with empirical science, then we'd have to assume that evolution is true as there's yet to be any evidence to disprove it. Intelligent design theory doesn't even utilize the scientific method, and the evidence against the existence of God seems to get larger by the day.

Basically, the intelligent design theory states that an unspecified magical sky fairy directs the course of evolution (in a manner of speaking), rather than natural selection.

The problem with this Creationist spin-off nonsense is that a magical sky fairy is not required to explain how species evolved. Through research, experimentation and logic, scientists find actual environmental reasons why a species evolved the way it did.

For example, giraffes evolved long necks because eating high-up greenery means they don't need to compete with other grazing animals. They didn't have long necks originally, but long necks were a useful trait that increased their chances of survival, and also (by extension) of finding a mate. Animals, humans included, subconsciously recognize dominant traits that are desirable for passage to the next generation.

And so now, millions of years later, giraffes have necks longer than a Volkswagen Beetle, and a comfortable food niche that's not going away anytime soon.

Where exactly does an unspecified magical sky fairy fit into this? No designer was needed to "plan out" long-necked giraffes. They bred selectively, they mutated, and longer-necked giraffes survived better than ones with shorter necks, which over the course of millions of years, had a dramatic effect on the species as a whole.
