No,and this is hardly barbaric.This is the way its done the world over.You want all the blood out of the animal as soon as possible.Commercial slaughter houses most of the time will kill an animal and hang it to let the blood drain.But if hanging it is not an option,then letting its heart pump all the blood out that it can is the next best thing.
If you dont drain the blood quickly it will make dark spots on the meat where it settles and coagulates.
I have done it this same way many times on hogs.


Edit:Meat just dosent magically appear in your local grocery store,it has to go through a very similar fate.
