Four people are dead after a Lexus sedan lost control and burst into flames and two of the victims may be children, a boy and girl, who were sitting in the back seat, investigators said. The male and female in the front may have been their parents.

The male driver called 911 shortly before 7 p.m. Friday in Santee, saying his accelerator was stuck. Witnesses said they saw the Lexus heading northbound on 125 weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed.

It's pretty funny they called 911, what could police and emergency services have done about it? It would take far too long to set up some kind of safe stopping roadblock.

And I'm not sure if you can remove the keys from a moving car, I've never tried it before. He said the brakes weren't working, either, and I suppose they'd only do so much if the accelerator is stuck. Not sure about changing gears, that might be somewhat ineffective in an automatic. But the key would be the way to go if it's able to be removed.

I think he should have turned the wheel all the way left or right as soon as he saw the accelerometer go past 80 or 90 beyond his control, tried to roll the car (even in traffic), and taken his chances that way.

Well, in my opinion it's quite possible for a car with a "stuck" accelerator to be doomed to that condition.

When people hit the brakes normally, they take their foot off the gas pedal. If the accelerator is stuck, it would be like slamming both of your feet down on each pedal. I've never done such a crazy-ass thing before, but I assume it's possible for the brakes to then fail or for the engine to overcome the braking pressure.

Next, the handbrake. I've seen plenty of vehicles in which someone will start driving, then realize ten or thirty seconds later that they've left the handbrake on. Meanwhile, the car's still moving forward at near-full power. Depends on the car, depends on the handbrake.

Now as for shifting gears (on an automatic), once again, I've never shifted into neutral or park from 80 MPH. I have no idea what would happen, and I'm not inclined to try it out.

And the key, well... who the fuck knows, once again I've never tried to remove one from a moving vehicle. Some vehicles may have safety mechanisms to prevent this.

I'm just thinking, I'm sure this guy tried some or all of these methods. They did all die, so either he overlooked something, he wanted to commit murder-suicide, or he simply forgot about the key/shifting gears.

No one will ever know.

The dispatcher asks where they are and Lastrella asks others in the car before replying, “We're going 120 (mph)! Mission Gorge! We're in trouble – we can't – there's no brakes, Mission Gorge -- end freeway half mile.” Witnesses told San Diego 6 News they saw fire coming from the wheels of the 2009 Lexus ES 350 before it crashed. That indicated "long, constant, heavy braking," said San Diego Sheriff's lead investigator Scott Hill in an interview with the U-T.

The National Highway Transporatation Safety Administraton recall report from 2007 found some Lexus drivers with stuck accelerators tried to turn off the car with the engine control button but didn't know the button must be held for three seconds.
This would work, but at 120 mph in heavy traffic it's not possible. and if you didn't know you had to hold it for 3 seconds you'd just assume after pressing it and nothing happening that it wasn't working.

Smoking the tires is possible while depressing both pedals, but this is done while the vehicle is parked and in drive (in automatics)
You can also gear down an automatic transmission and even throw it into reverse, this will, of course, destroy the tranny internally. I did it with a 66 Cadillac at 40 mph and it destroyed the tranny, but we did come to a complete stop.

An automatic transmission can be put into neutral at any time and at any speed.
