Throwing it into a spin would be one thing to try, but we've all seen in UR what happens when cars hit trees and poles! A glancing blow would be better than straight on though.

Well, when you live in the city like I do, rarely go over 45 MPH, and run into heavy traffic or even full-blown jams on a regular basis, it's a lot easier not to have to fuck with the clutch several thousand times on the way home.

That being said, I can drive stick, and I prefer it on the open highway or in non-crowded cities.

Also, thank you for providing me with the privilege of tossing American Insult #4,326 on my pile here. Enjoy watching your American television this evening, have fun seeing the newest Hollywood blockbuster on the weekend, and try to resist stopping at any of the four or five local McDonald's on your way back home. After that, maybe you can relax playing an online game developed in the United States, like Team Fortress 2 or Call of Duty 4.

I guess you guys do have the BBC and The Office, so maybe you can skip the television.

I thought the same thing, but didn't mention it.

It's just standard procedure in our society, like newspaper headlines such as this one:

PRETTY BLONDE COED MISSING, THREE COUNTIES MOUNT MASSIVE MANHUNT

Then, in a footnote on page 16:

Six black men gunned down, sheriff says hunt for killers will likely prove fruitless.

I think kids are put on pedestals because they have an entire life ahead of them, whereas the adults are already worn out and on the road to death anyways.

Toyota today will order its dealers to inspect the floor mats in all of their vehicles amid reports that a wrong-sized mat may have played a role in the recent Santee crash that killed four people in a runaway Lexus.

Investigators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said an all-weather mat found in the wreckage could have interfered with the accelerator, Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said yesterday.

The mat was a couple of inches longer than the mat that belonged in the vehicle, Lyons said.

“The securing points would not allow that mat to be properly attached to the vehicle,” Lyons said. “If it is the mat we think it is, the holes would not line up with the clips.”

Two years ago, Toyota recalled its ridged, rubber, all-weather mats in the 2007 and early 2008 models of the Lexus ES 350 and Toyota Camry because of complaints that if not properly installed, the mats could slip forward and entrap the gas pedal.
I had a Lincoln that did this on occasion, the first time I just cut the key off and saw the problem and slid the mat back. After that it did it a few more times and I would just reach down and slide it back with my foot on the brake until the accelerator released.

A lot of good comments but either way of what the driver may or may not have been able to do about, it is still a drive I would not like to take that's for sure, I have driven in America and there is some big ass cars and trucks on the roads, that is what would be going threw my mind, and the windscreen.

I have a feeling that this RECALL issued by Toyota is a direct result of this tragedy:

I wish I had seen this thread earlier to get in some comments.

Great post, the sheer terror these folks must have felt stuck with me for a few minutes. Must of seen something directly in their path, and at 124 mph (maximum allowed speed by governor) you can still see what your about to hit in slow motion, they might have even seen the face of the driver in the other vehicle. Shit's Deep.

The poor guy must have been panicking towards the end and didn't know what to do, I don't think putting it into neutral would have helped too much giving the speed they were going.

SB you can take a cars keys out while it's moving I've seen it done before although not at the speed this car was travelling!! The engine dies and slowly rolls to a stop it might have worked for this poor guy seeing as the accelarator was stuck! But I doubt he thought of it at the time seeing as it was the first and in the end the final time he was put in that situation!
