CCTV,Peterborough,England.Shocking footage of a savage city-centre attack has been released to The Evening Telegraph to illustrate the appalling brutality of street violence in the city.
Frightening CCTV images show a gang of thugs piling into two victims with a succession of savage kicks, punches and head stamps outside a popular Peterborough night spot.

The attack near Liquid nightclub, in N More..ew Road, was launched in full view of the city's security camera operators, and the footage was used to secure the conviction of the attackers.

Four members of the five-strong group were handed jail sentences ranging from six to 15 months after they all pleaded guilty to affray.

The case prompted city judge Nicholas Coleman to launch a stinging attack on Peterborough's drinking culture, claiming law-abiding citizens were scared to go out in the city for fear of alcohol-fuelled violence.

He said: "Nobody who has seen the CCTV footage can fail to be shocked. This is the sort of mindless violence that is completely unacceptable.

"It is all too common. People are afraid to go out at night in the city, and it has to be stopped."

It was in the early hours of December 23 last year, when the vast majority of revellers were enjoying a good-natured night out in the spirit of the festive season, that the ugly attack was launched.

Wisbech men Arron Wright (21), Shaun Simpson (19), Anthony Melton (21) and Aaron Reid (20), and Melton's brother, Daniel (23), had been to several bars and clubs in the city centre, and all but Reid – the designated driver – had been drinking heavily.

"Ringleader" Wright, of Cherry Road, was sentenced in July to 10 months' imprisonment, while Anthony Melton, of Victoria Place, was given a longer 15-month sentence because he had been serving a suspended prison sentence for another offence at the time. Daniel Melton, from Blackpool, got seven months, while Reid, of Cherry Road, was sentenced to six months behind bars.

Simpson, like Reid, was said to have played a lesser role in the assaults and was given a suspended six-month prison term with community service because he had no previous convictions.

The CCTV footage first shows one of the attackers wrestling with one of the victims in the road while Wright – who sports a festive Santa hat – delivers a series of punches and kicks to the victim's head.

Simpson and the Melton brothers then join in the assault with more kicks, punches and stamps until the victim can be seen lying motionless on the ground.

The entire group are then seen turning on another man after he tries to protect his friend – chasing him down the street, flooring him and subjecting him to a flurry of blows.

At one point, one of the attackers can be seen taking a run up before hurling himself two-footed on to the victim. The footage then shows the men walking casually away from the scene.

In my considered and liberal opinion, anyone who beats someone when they are on the ground should be hung. Short-drop method. Kicking, tongue out, pissing their breaches for the full regulation 15 minutes.
