The right thing to do was to stop the fight, by intervening and pulling them off each other, telling them both that the police have called (whether they have or not), or any number of other solutions that don't involve one adult father smashing one teenage boy in the head with a weapon.

It's just a teenage fight. I know I started quite a few fights when I was a teenager, most men have, and the punishment for that shouldn't be getting your head bashed in.
